Why do we need the working group prevention?
No means no! The WG Prevention of Sexualized Violence has been in existence for almost a year now. We would like to keep you up to date on what has happened since then and what our next milestones are. Basically, it all started with a training course offered by our quality association ventao.
At our first meeting, we collected ideas on how we can take preventive action against sexualized violence in our association work – because sexualized violence is a complex issue. It has to be considered on different levels: Volunteers can, for example, potentially become victims of sexualized violence. They can observe it (e.g. in the assignment sites) or learn about it through third parties. Therefore, it is important that all persons involved in the volunteer program – volunteers, assignment sites, host families, regional groups – deal with this topic. In addition, it is important for us as association to have contact persons for this topic. Also, we should take preventive action against sexualized violence!
Since the founding of the working group, we have revised the association’s existing guidelines for volunteers and volunteers’ companions. We added a list of professional contact points in all cities where we currently have regional groups. Additionally, a first seminar unit was created for the arrival seminar of the volunteers who arrived this year. According to the feedback, this unit was very valuable and important for all participants.
Sessions on the topic at the mid-term and final seminars are planned, too. In the future, we would like to talk about sexualized violence with the host families and the supervisors of the volunteers in the volunteer workplaces. Furthermore, we would like to organize a training for all members of the Zugvögel association in order to sensitize them to the topic in the context of volunteer services and to learn from each other.
